Some cities around the world, especially China, have started redesigning areas of their streets and benches that are prone to an overpopulation of homeless people. Some of the redesigns make use of spikes that would make it extremely uncomfortable for a homeless person to sleep on, other redesigns change the bench to be single person sitting areas only with large obtrusive edges and arm rests that make it pretty much impossible to sleep on, as well as wavy designs to make it more uncomfortable.
It seems that rather than actually solving their homeless problem, cities have taken a quick and temporary solution of just hoping the homeless that frequent their areas move on to a more comfortable location.
Other cities have actually installed benches that you have to pay to sit on. Simply enter a few quarters and the giant spikes that point up sink down into the bench and allow you to sit for a few minutes. Just be sure to get back up before your time runs out. Hopefully there's some sort of alarm...
